Scotland occupies the northern third of the island of Great Britain and shares a land border to the south with England. It is bounded by the North Sea to the east, the Atlantic Ocean to the north and west, and the North Channel and Irish Sea to the southwest. The 30,414 mi2 Scottish mainland is skirted by over 790 islands. Scotland has over 600 square miles of fresh water lochs.

In 1999, the first Scottish parliament for over 300 years was opened by the queen. It is responsible for the issues that are not explicitly reserved to the United Kingdom Parliament at Westminster by the Scotland Act; these include the Scottish branch of the NHS, transport, education, justice and rural affairs. It managed an annual budget of more than £27 billion in the financial year 2005-2006; this is due to rise to over £30 billion in 2007-2008. Currently in power are the Scottish National Party, and their leader, Alex Salmond, is Scotland’s first minister.

Edinburgh is the country’s capital and, like Rome, was built on seven hills. It is the second largest Scottish city after Glasgow. Scotland has a population of 5,062,011.

Famous Scots include: Walter Scott, Robert Burns, Sean Connery, Arthur Conan Doyle, David Hume and Robert Louis Stevenson
